Claver, Peter

Claver, Peter
(1580–1654)
   Saint, Philanthropist and Missionary.
Claver was born in Vedu, Spain. He was educated at the University of Barcelona and he joined the Jesuit Order in 1600. Sent by the Jesuits to Colombia, which was at that period a clearing house for the slave trade, he dedicated himself to the service of the Africans who arrived in appalling conditions in Cartagena. He provided basic medical care, preached to them and baptised them. He was canonised in 1888 and is much revered by Afro-Americans in both the United States of America and Latin America.
